PDRC Meeting- October 2022
PDRC Meeting Report
27th October 2022
The PDRC had another great meeting at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. In the October 2022 PDRC event, attendees heard from a number of engaging speakers who are at the forefront in their respective fields.
A highlight was hearing from Prof. Mark Thomas of Royal Perth Hospital, who spoke of his experience in care of patients with Fabry’s disease and of the promising results of novel gene therapies that are in development.
Dr Neli Slavova-Azmanova gave an insightful presentation on the importance of delivering value-based health care, which prioritizes the patient’s experience of healthcare, rather than purely focusing on clinical endpoints. She spoke of her work in the breast cancer and oncology space, and how these principles are applicable across all fields, including dermatology. Many attendees were excited to hear of the work of scientist Dr Nutan Chaudari from the Burn Injury and Research Unit/UWA, who is pioneering research in emerging treatments for many forms of scarring, and we look forward to the results of further trials in this area.
We also had talks from two registrars who spoke on important public health issues. Dr Adeline Hillan works with the North Metropolitan Communicable Disease Control Centre talked about the emerging measles, syphilis, and monkeypox epidemics in Australia and how we as clinicians can vigilant. Dr Dean Choong spoke on the rise of conditions such as hyperkeratotic flexural erythema during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been associated with use of several laundry rinse aids, and how we approach the dermatological management of this issue.
